Our daughter got on a Spanish movie kick and I believe it was recommended by her Spanish teacher. Unfortunately, we had to watch with subtitles as our Spanish vocabulary is limited. I recommend "The Devil's Backbone." Not a shocker type horror, but a pretty film about an orphanage with the Spanish Civil War as the backdrop. Very pretty imagery. Ending had a bit of a twist... go check it out if yo u haven't. I like Guillermo's (director) commentary (on the DVD). He said Horror Films are a celebration of things different. (my paraphrasing) Not everything in life is happy and filled with rainbows. Accepting the dark things is a part of accepting life. Just resubscribed last week…

I recommend “The Devil’s Backbone.” Not a shocker type horror, but a pretty film about an orphanage with the Spanish Civil War as the backdrop. Very pretty imagery. Ending had a bit of a twist… go check it out if yo u haven’t. I like Guillermo’s (director) commentary (on the DVD). He said Horror Films are a celebration of things different. That will always be my favorite horror movie. No film has ever scared me more. Most unnerving were the "subliminal" flashes of the demonic faces and the possesed eyes of Linda Blair. When it was over I had to walk home. In the dark. By myself. My other favorite is Suspiria by Dario Argento. The combination of the colored lighting, the music by Goblin and the sharp contrasts in sound from soft to loud to silence all add to the horror of this disturbing and violent film.
