The Long Tail

Posted in Podcasts on March 6th, 2007

Barb and Susie discuss the book, The Long Tail, by Chris Anderson.  The gist of the book is that the internet has made it possible to sell (and find!) even the most obscure and arcane music, books, movies, etc., because there is no minimum sales requirement to carry items online.  Once you add up all the tiny sales, you have a whole bunch of commerce that never existed before due to the required inventory, shelf space, and all the other headaches of the bricks and mortar retailers.  Score another win for the internet!

I’m way behind on my shows, but I just listened to this episode and wanted to add that with music, I think it’s very hard to be a casual listener of obscure music. You’re either a music geek and are willing to invest the time in searching for what you wouldn’t otherwise find, or you aren’t.

Even with the long tail theory, it’s impossible for everything to be easily provided to all people, but you can easily find everything if you look. And that’s where the topic specific websites come in.

    Love the show!
