Fragrance Trends - Smells like Teen Spirit

Posted in Podcasts on April 11th, 2006

Ah, youth! Anything to attract the opposite sex. We talk about the burgeoning teenage body spray market: Axe, Tag, etc., and how some schools are considering a ban for health (asthma) reasons. Nostalgic memories of English Leather, Musk, Taboo, and others remind us of past lives. Hotels are even getting in on the act, picking fragrances for their lobbies to make you feel ‘comfortable.’ And the fascinating news that McDonalds uses a flavoring to insure continuity in the taste of every French fry, regardless of the potato or the grease!

Love the new show! Firstly, I remember when the Grey Flannel craze
was on. I was in highschool at the time and all the popular and
preppie kids wore it. Not long after, the artier crowd that I ran
with began wearing a scent from The Body Shop called Dewberry. We all
henna’d our hair red and wore Dewberry esential oil perfume. Good
Times. Afterward, I went through a Vanilla phase. Again, I got my
scent from The Body Shop. It wasn’t a straight vanilla but a blended
perfume. One day, I went with my Grandmother to pick fruit. When I
stepped out of the car, I was overwhelmed by the exact same smell
that the Vanilla was: warm strawberries on a sunny day. The added
bonus of that perfume was that it disguised my smoking habit and
instead of smelling like an ashtray, I smelled like pipe tobaccco.
(I’ve long since quit the smoking and now smell mostly like Downy
fabric softener!) From the Vanilla perfume, I hopped over to Satsuma,
again from the Body Shop. This was a citrus perfume with a strong
tangerine smell. I no longer wear perfume. It’s a strange habit I’ve
gotten out of. Although, when Sarah Jessica Parker released a
fragrance, I got a sample vial from Eatons and gave it a try. But, it
smells like old ladies to me. I prefer something bright and fruity.
One of my all-time fave scents is pink grapefruit. I usually buy
glycerine soaps and ody wash in grapefruit or papaya scent or
something similar. I find the grapefruit in particular really wakes
me up and makes me feel happy and excited. Gosh, i could have written
a blog post with all that! Anyway, thought you might enjoy reading my
reminiscences about perfume. And, I love that Opium Jukebox song!
    Wonderful cover!
