In Memoriam - The Nut Lady: Elizabeth Tashjian

Posted in Podcasts on January 30th, 2007

A true original died Sunday night at the age of 95. Susie tells Barb about the fascinating experience of getting to know the Nut Lady, Elizabeth Tashjian, in the late 90’s, during the last years of the existence of her Nut Museum. Susie dubs her the “Georgia O’Keefe” of nuts and one of the most interesting people she ever met. You will be remembered Elizabeth. The March of the Nuts is On!

    Nice change of pace ladies.

And, I think you’re right about how Carson conducted himself on the air, too.

One minor but significant correction: Christopher Steiner is Professor and Director of Museum Studies at Connecticut College in New London, CT, NOT the University of Connecticut.

    Susie,
Your stories of that American original, “the nut lady” were delightful! I had no idea she was so famous. Check out her full page obit in the 2-4-07 NY Times.

Great show! Definitely a story that you just can’t get through the mainsteam media. I had never heard of this lady before, but I’m glad I have now.

    Thanks!

Wonderful interview. I knew Elizabeth when I was a child in the 1950’s, when she was my mother’s Christian Science “practitioner,” and I don’t think I fully appreciated her originality and strength until I listened to your interview, for which I say a heartfelt “thank you.” I thank you for taking the time to remember and present this unique individual.

Thanks June - if you have any stories or remembrances, feel free to leave them in comments here!! I didn’t know anything about her Christian Science background or much of anything of her younger life.
