Are You Ready For Umbrella Academy?

What happens when forty-three women simultaneously give birth to super-powered children? If you have read Umbrella Academy then you already know the answer. For those who haven’t, the trailer for the Netflix series just dropped today.

Umbrella Academy is a comic book series created by Gerard Way (of My Chemical Romance fame) and Gabriel Ba. There are currently three volumes of the comic available, as well as a handful of short stories. The series was published by Dark Horse Comics.

In 1989, forty-three babies are born from women who were not pregnant. These children were born with a variety of super powers. Some of the children are reunited when the wealthy Reginald Hargreeves attempts to adopt all forty-three children. He then starts the Umbrella Academy to train the children to save the day. Umbrella Academy provides the best of both worlds in terms of super hero drama and dysfunctional family stories.

The Netflix series is developed by Steve Blackman, known for production on Altered Carbon and Fargo (the television series). The series is going to premier on February 15th, 2019. The show sports a great cast, including Ellen Page, Mary J. Blige, and Robert Sheehan.

My Thoughts

I live in a very Gerard Way-positive household. My Chemical Romance is my wife’s all time favorite band. We have a lot of their merchandise and listen to them often.

My Chemical Romance’s Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge is one of my all-time favorite pop-punk albums. I love the way the band brought the dark punk aesthetic of bands like The Misfits into the modern day. It definitely got me through a lot of hard times in high school.

I also love the Umbrella Academy comic. I finally got around to reading the series last year and I had a great time doing so. Gerard also did a phenomenal job with his run of Doom Patrol. Needless to say, I am very excited for a live-action Umbrella Academy.

The trailer for Umbrella Academy looks phenomenal. The characters and plot seem similar to the comics. Netflix has done an excellent job (with a few exceptions) with comic book based series. Blackman’s history of dark dramas seems like a good fit for the series.

Head over to Netflix to check out the trailer. Keep an eye out for when the series drops in three weeks.
