‘Pixar in Real Life’: How Disney+ is Revitalizing The Hidden Camera Format

From Candid Camera to Punk’d, using hidden cameras to pull fast ones over civilians and celebrities alike is nothing new, but the way Disney+ is doing it just might be.

From the team behind Improv Everywhere, Pixar in Real Life is a short-form series that brings the magic and whimsy of Pixar to the streets of New York City.

Most hidden camera shows feature mean spirited pranks, this is quite the opposite.

Whether it’s stumbling upon the console from Inside Out in a park to encountering WALL-E, the show takes iconic moments and characters from the famed studio’s films and see what happens when everyday people find themselves in fantastical situations.

Releasing a new episode the first Friday of every month, a highlight is when the show goes outside the city to an archery range in Long Island when on horseback Merida, the main character from Brave, stops by for some target practice much to the skepticism of the range’s supervisor.

Bullseye after bullseye, the red-headed archer quickly wins over the crowd and before you know it, is back on her horse on her merry way.

The show gives a breath of fresh air to the old format of hidden camera to great effect. Right now the episodes are usually around five minutes in length but the show has so much potential material that it’s only scratching the surface and could easily expand into a half-hour if picked for another season after it’s first 12 episodes have been released.
