Pop Culture Kitchen: ‘Hocus Pocus’ Party Snacks

The wind is blowing a bit chillier, it’s getting dark earlier, leaves are falling… IT IS FALL! What a perfect time for a family movie night! Your kids will love helping you make these snacks for a Hocus Pocus party!

Spellbook Brownies

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 sticks butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup all purpose flour
  • Hefty pinch of salt
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips
  • Wilton’s candy eyeballs
  • black decorating icing

Directions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Grease an 8 or 9 inch square baking pan with butter.
  2. In a medium sized pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Remove from heat, then whisk in the brown and white sugar until smooth and creamy, about 1-2 minutes.
  3. Add the eggs and egg yolk, one at a time, whisking well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla.
  4. Add the cocoa powder and flour and stir until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips. Pour the mixture into the prepared pans and bake for 35-40 minutes.
  5. Allow to cool then cut into rectangles.
  6. Using your decorating icing, stick the eyeball on then decorate your brownie to look like The Sanderson Sisters’ Spellbook

Hocus Pocus Candied Popcorn

Ingredients:

  • Sharable size bag of skittles
  • 1 stick of butter
  • 3 bags of Already popped microwave popcorn

Directions:

  1. Sort through your bag of skittles and separate the greens, oranges, and purples. Separate the entire bag and you should have about enough of each color for the recipe.
  2. Melt 1/3 stick of butter in a nonstick pan and add whichever color Skittles you want to use first. Cook on medium heat, stirring until skittles are fully melted.
  3. Pour over popcorn in a separate bowl and quickly mix to coat entire popcorn. Spread popcorn out onto parchment paper and allow to cool.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 with the other two colors.
  5. Once cool you can transfer all colors into a large bowl and enjoy!
