Funko Friday: Embrace Your Inner Evil With ‘Five Nights At Freddy’s Night of Frights!’ Game

Now that we’re only ten days away from Halloween, I know a lot of us are ready to channel our inner villain. This week’s Funko Friday lets you do just that. Today, we’re taking a spin around the pizza parlor with Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy in Five Night At Freddy’s Night of Frights! The game is for 2 to 4 players ages 8 and older.

Included in the Night of Frights! box are the four character figures, 4 character cards, 4 character tokens, the Mr. Cupcake token, the security camera token with base, game board, scare tracker, bag, 36 item tokens, 2 guard tokens, 19 “miss” tokens, 5 action tokens, 18 action cards, 12 event cards, and game instructions. The instructions come with a QR code to a video that will walk players through the game setup and gameplay. The average gameplay session lasts around 30 minutes.

Night of Frights! is easy to pick up and play right away. Players select their character and attempt to capture the pizza parlor guard before the sun comes up. Sounds easy, right? Along the way characters increase their scariness by collecting and redeeming items throughout the parlor while avoiding detection on the security camera. When a player is ready to take a tab (pun only slightly intended) at capturing the guard, the player moves to one of the two rooms adjacent to the security office, takes an Event card from the deck, and draws a number of tiles from the bag, hoping to draw a guard token. If he or she does, then that player wins the game. If all the player draws are “miss” tokens, then play continues, but the number of remaining attempts are reduced. If no player draws the guard tile before all the Event cards are used, then the guard escapes and all players lose.

Night of Frights! plays like a mashup of other Funko tabletop games. Players move around the board collecting items similar to The Haunted Mansion, then redeem specific combinations of items for scare points, similar to Something Wild!. Action cards allow players to take shortcuts, either literally by moving around the board or by stealing items from other players in order to advance their scariness. Those competitive moments help to remind players that they are the villains and that every player is out for him or herself while also needing to work together to capture the guard before sunrise. The randomness of the way items are placed and  drawing the tiles from the bag makes Night of Frights! infinitely replayable… a thing we’ll be doing in our home many more times.
