Pop Culture Kitchen: Cthulhu Pie

It’s Pi Day and I can’t think of a better reason to whip up a delicious pie at home! Take it a step further with out Cthulhu Pie recipe!

For the crust

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup of ice water
  • 1 cup of cold lard or butter

Directions:

  1. In a medium bowl, stir together flour, salt, and sugar.
  2. Cut in lard or butter to get coarse crumbs.
  3. Add water and combine using hands. Work quickly as to not warm up the mixture much.
  4. Divide into two even parts and form into disks. Wrap and refrigerate for an hour.
  5. Roll our your disks into even, flat circles.

 

For the pie filling

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  •  1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp lemon zest
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Directions:

  • Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. That’s all.

    Extras you will need:

  • 1 small cored apple
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp water
  • sugar for dusting

Assemble your pie!

  1. Lay one pie crust into a regular 9” pie pan and add your blackberry filling.
  2. In the middle of your pie or where you would like the Cthulhu head to be, add a whole cored apple.
  3. Take your second pie crust and cut strips halfway around the pie crust from the middle out for your tentacles. Cut some of the extra dough off to use for eyes and extra tentacles. Don’t be afraid to let it get crazy.
  4. Carefully place entire top crust over your pie making sure to place uncut section over the apple.
  5. Twist and arrange your tentacles and use extra dough to make eye sockets and insert blackberry eyes.
  6. Wish together one egg and one tbsp water. Brush over entire pie then sprinkle with sugar.
  7. Bake at 350 for 20 minutes or until golden brown.
