Pop Goes the Culture Newsletter for April 2022

April showers bring May flowers. The month of April also brings an exciting month for Pop Goes the Culture. But, before we get to all that, let’s pause a moment and reflect on the month of March.

  • Will Crosby made his first appearance on the Pop Goes the Culture podcast back in the first episode of the month during our lesser-known Batman villains draft (after a star-making turn on the new Law & Order series).
  • We finally got everyone a win in our Cage Match series when Curtis seized his first victory from the jaws of… well, from finishing with a tie.
  • Tara brought us recipes for a The Princess and the Frog themed Mardi Gras, a MAR10 Super Mario Bros. themed party, Cthulhu pie for Pi Day, and a Lord of the Rings feast for National Read Tolkien Day.
  • We bookended our February “favorite love songs” playlist with our “favorite heartbreak songs” serving as our March playlist.
  • Joey, Kenny, and Dusty ran the Pop Goes the Culture Panel Room at NWA Comic Con in Roger, AR. Twelve hours of programming over two days. Thanks to the folks at AVC Conventions for having us and to the people who showed up and helped us have a blast! We can’t wait to come back again — though we might see some of you again when we take to the road this month.

As much fun as March was, April is going to be even more packed full of entertainment and pop culture goodness. New episodes of the Pop Goes the Culture podcast in April include our favorite game shows and the things we wish we were good at fantasy drafts. Our April playlist will be our favorite “happy hits”, or songs that put us in a good mood. Plus, at the end of the month, we’ll crown our first Cage Match champion.

One last thing…

I (Joey) was going through some old clothes to donate as part of my annual spring cleaning and found the ticket stub pictured above in the pocket of a jacket I haven’t worn in almost four and a half years. In November of 2017, Kenny and I went to the now defunct Kansas City Comic Con to, among other things, catch a live recording of the podcast that was then called Fatman on Batman, hosted by Kevin Smith and Marc Bernardin. We had decided that we wanted to start a podcast and we wanted to check out how the pros did it. We had a good time, and a few weeks after this event we sat down with Dusty and recorded the very first episode of the Pop Goes the Culture podcast.

Funny how things work out.
