‘Stargirl’ Season 1 Advance Review: Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E.

DC’s Stargirl is centered around the life of high school student Courtney Whitmore. Geoff Johns created the character in 1999, and she is named after his late sister who passed away in ’96. Courtney discovers the cosmic staff that only she can wield and takes on the identity of Stargirl. Along with this new title comes the responsibility of assembling a new Justice Society of America and taking on the Injustice Society.

The overly dramatized CW style DC shows haven’t worked for me in the past. So going into this I had fairly low expectations. However the on screen chemistry of Brec Bassinger and Luke Wilson was pretty charming. The rest of the cast is on point as well. Not to mention this show does a great job of laying the groundwork with these characters. They’re quick to tell you what you need to know about a character and if they don’t it’s because you’re not supposed to know yet. This cuts out a lot of unnecessary plot threads and helps keep the show on pace. The story has quite a bit of humor peppered in as well, while still having the trademark CW drama and it is not afraid to get dark fast.

My general rule is, give every series a three episode chance. If that draws me in, it’s probably worth watching. Therefore after watching the first three episodes of Stargirl, I feel it’s safe to say the show hits its mark. I’ll definitely be back for more and I hope you’ll give it a chance as well. The show will premiere on DC Universe and next day air on the The CW and The CW’s streaming service.
