The spooky season is upon us (okay, July 5th starts the spooky season in my house). The pumpkin spice is flowing. Monster cereals are back on the shelves. The seasonal aisles at the store are lined with faux dead leaves and bags of chocolate that you say you’ll buy now and will last you until Halloween, but you know you’re going to eat the entire bag in a week and buy another next weekend.
That said, it’s time to shift our focus toward Halloween themed games on our Funko Fridays. This week, we’re taking a look at the Jack Skellington edition of Something Wild!
As with other Something Wild! games, players compete with one another to complete 3-card sets and runs, making the Something Wild! series a great introduction to Rummy-like mechanics for newer or younger players. What makes Something Wild! unique are the Funko Pop style figures and powers. A Power Card is revealed at the start of the game, and when a player plays a card of the same color as the Power Card, they take possession of the figure — in this case, Jack Skellington — whether that’s taking the figure from the middle of the play area for the first time or swiping it from another player. When a player completes a set or run, they receive the Power Card and a new Power Card is revealed. Players who possess the figure and one or more Power Card can play those Powers, making it easier to complete their next scoring set or run.
Included in the box are 45 Character Cards, 10 Power Cards, 1 Jack Skellington Pop! figure, and the Instructions. Something Wild! is designed for 2 to 4 players ages 6 and up. The average play session lasts about 15 minutes.
As a stand alone game, Something Wild! is a lot of fun. Everything you need to play is all included in the box. In addition to unique Power Cards, the Jack Skellington cards add another layer of fun to the game. For me personally, however, the game really shines when you add multiple decks together into a fast and frenetic experience, with multiple figures and Powers in play.
