Funko Games continues to build on its popular collectible dice and miniatures game Marvel Battleworld with a new, third series titled Ultimate Armory. The core gameplay mechanics remain in place, allowing for solo and cooperative team play, while adding 31 new characters and a new Armor mechanic that would warm Tony Stark’s injured heart.
As with previous series, the game is available in a Mega Pack to kick-start your collection. The Mega Pack includes the exclusive Classic Vision character, 1 exclusive foil Hero Card, 3 Heroes and their Cards, 2 Thanostones (each containing 1 Mystery Hero and their Cards), 13 Battle Cards, 1 Attack Die, 13 Danger Tokens, 7 Armor Tokens, 1 Danger Coin, and the instructions. Marvel Battleworld is geared for 1 to 4 players ages 6+. Gameplay averages 15 to 30 minutes per session.
To round out their collections, players can purchase individual Battle Balls. Each Battle Ball contains 1 Hero and their Card, 1 Thanostone containing 1 Mystery Hero and their Card, 5 Battle Cards, 1 Attack Die, 5 Danger Tokens, 3 Armor Tokens, 1 Danger Coin, and a set of instructions. Battle Balls are blind boxes, so you never know which characters you’ll receive. If one received no duplicate characters, the entire series 3 lineup would require purchasing the Mega Pack, which guarantees only the Classic Vision exclusive, and 13 Battle Balls.
The Armor mechanic added in series 3 — from which Ultimate Armory gets its name — can either make battles harder for players by making opponents harder to eliminate or assists players by increasing their damage against armored foes. Drawing an Armor Battle Card at the wrong time can delay the game long enough for Danger to advance and build up and overwhelm players who are not playing attention or not communicating and working well together. Like the Loki’s Trick mechanic from series 2, success comes down to a lot of coordination and a bit of luck.
Combining various characters, cards, and mechanics from across the 3 series of Marvel Battleworld really highlights the longevity, collectability, and replayability of the game. Those older characters sitting on your shelf or in your game box are not overshadowed by the latest releases. Rather, players can experience those characters alongside new characters in different and dynamic ways as additional mechanics are added. Each gameplay session includes new and interesting combinations that keeps players coming back time and again.
